Olivier Dheilly, archiviz artist from La Reunion, tells 3D Architettura about his aproach to rendering and photorealistic 3d visualizations

Why have you decided to work in 3d-field? When have you started? Where did you study?

OD: More than 13 years ago, I used to learn 3D by myself every night. In 2003 I decided to leave my job and to create “3D phi”, an archviz agency in Réunion Island. I work for architects, institutions, industry, real estate.

What is your usual workflow? Which plugins and software you use? Do you make all the project yourself or delegate some parts of it?

OD: I work with Blender Cycles for 3D realisations and the post-prod is done with Photoshop. To realise an animation movie I use Blender Cycles and sometime Google Earth Pro. I use Premiere Pro and After Effect too for the post prod. I work alone or with freelances for bigger projects (Graphists, sound studio, art director, cameraman)

What your consider most important in creating photo-realistic lighting and materials? Any advice for the students just starting to learn 3D?

OD: I consider it’s important to use your own textures library and material to sign your work. For lighting I use HDRI environement and I adjust with a sun for better shadows and some lights if necessary. Sometime it’s faster to adjust some details with Photoshop. The time is important because you’ve got a client brief, budget and deadline to respect.
An advice to verify your work: every hour just watch your work in black and white with symmetry and every defaults will appear.
Another advice in modeling: if your model is done well, it will be easier to modify it after, you can be sure your customer will ask you to modify something in a short time.

Do you have any personal know-how for creating photo-realistic vegetation and plants?

OD: Blender is performant to create grass, trees and plants but every project is different. Sometime a plane with png texture can do the job with a good result for a tree or a plant for a single picture. For a movie I use 3D plants in first plan and planes at second plan (with rotation constraint to camera). The same for grass, 3D at first plan and texture at second plan.

What are your plans for the future? What forecasts you can make about the future of 3d-world in general?

OD: For 3D future the issue is “time”. Every business need 3D but 3D is expensive. If technical evolution allow to produce faster, 3D will be cheaper. It’s important to open the 3D market to new customers. 3D is the best tool to present, explain and convice in any kind of project. Every business have a project.
