During the 2026 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Adobe presented the latest update for its texturing software, Substance 3D Painter. Version 12.0 introduces several improvements, including updates to the layer stack workflow, enhanced decal projection tools, advanced post-processing effects, and new content.
The following overview takes a closer look at the main features introduced in the Substance 3D Painter 12.0 update.

New Flattening Layers
One of the standout additions in Substance 3D Painter 12.0 is the “Flatten Inside Layer Stack” feature.
Artists can now quickly merge layers by grouping them and creating a flattened copy of the group. The original source group is automatically disabled, allowing artists to either delete it or keep it as a smart material for later use.
A dedicated export option also allows users to bake the flattened group and save it directly to disk. Although simple, this feature can significantly streamline layer management and improve texturing workflows.

Warp to Geometry
Another particularly useful addition is the new “Warp to Geometry” projection mode.
With this tool, decals can now adapt more effectively to complex surfaces, reducing distortion and minimizing manual adjustments. The developers have added a dedicated Warp to Geometry toggle in the contextual toolbar, making it easier to activate the feature while working in projection mode.
As a result, decals follow the underlying mesh more accurately, providing greater flexibility when texturing detailed or irregular geometry.

New Post Effects
Substance 3D Painter 12.0 also introduces new post-processing effects, expanding the preview capabilities of the software.
New additions include Lens Flare, Film Grain, improved Depth of Field, and Glare effects, among others. These enhancements significantly improve the way artists visualize textures inside the viewport, offering a preview that more closely resembles the final look in a game engine or rendering environment.

New Content for Substance Library
Alongside these improvements, Adobe also announced an expansion of the Substance library during the conference. New content includes Ribbon assets, additional texture generators for material variation, and a new signature collection created by Ubisoft Senior 3D Artist Loïc Anquetil.
Substance 3D Painter 12.1 Open Beta
During the presentation, Adobe also discussed future plans for the software.
The team announced that the Substance 3D Painter 12.1 open beta is expected to launch soon. This upcoming version will introduce improvements to baking workflows and initial support for OpenPBR, a growing standard for physically based material definitions.
