On February 3rd, the Blender Foundation shared an overview of its development plans for 2026, outlining a roadmap that spans the entire year. The plan is structured around three major releases scheduled between March and November, combining new features with continued refinement of existing systems.

The roadmap divides 2026 into three main updates: Blender 5.1, expected in March, Blender 5.2 LTS, planned for July, and Blender 5.3, scheduled for November. The following overview highlights the key areas of development currently planned across these releases.

Blender 2026 Roadmap: Features of the 5.1 Update

Blender 5.1 is scheduled for release in March. An alpha version is already available and offers an early look at features currently in development.

  • Eevee Next Improvements: One of the main focuses of Blender 5.1 is the continued development of Eevee Next. Planned updates include improved planar reflections and refractions, which should enhance the appearance of glass materials and reflective surfaces. In addition, Blender foundation is planning further optimization of the ray tracing pipeline, particularly in shader compilation performance.
  • Virtual Reality and Interoperability:The roadmap includes improvements to VR navigation, alongside parallel development of interoperability between Vulkan and OpenXR. More advanced features, such as a dedicated location scouting system for virtual production, will likely arrive later in the development cycle.
  • Workflow and System Updates: Additional updates planned for 5.1 include support for AMD ray tracing hardware via HIP RT, improvements to the Asset Catalog, and refinements to the Dope Sheet and Timeline aimed at enhancing animation workflows.

What to Expect from Blender 5.2 LTS and 5.3

The second half of 2026 will be defined by Blender 5.2 LTS, expected in July. This will be followed by Blender 5.3 in November, with many features still under development.

  • Texturing and Shading: The Cycles texture cache is nearing its final development stage. It aims to improve efficiency when rendering high-resolution textures. This work will be accompanied by the introduction of a new OpenPBR node, expanding support for open material standards, as well as a new Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) system aimed at stylized visuals.
  • Animation and Compositing Workflow: In terms of animation and scene management, Blender plans to introduce a new approach to layered scene compositing. This system is expected to be based on an effects stack, similar in concept to the compositor modifier introduced in the Video Sequencer in Blender 5.0.
  • Interactivity and Simulation: The Blender team plans further development for interactivity tools, including updates to the hair dynamics system. The long-term goal is a new Geometry Nodes–based hair solver, which represents a key step toward replacing Blender’s legacy particle system.
  • Node-Based Tools Expansion: Blender will also continue expanding node-based workflows to simplify common operations, building on recent updates such as node-driven array systems.

Alongside the short- and mid-term updates, the Blender Foundation also highlighted several longer-term initiatives:

  • Blender porting to Android and tablet devices
  • Further enhancements to the Compositor and Video Sequencer, with features inspired by professional video editing software
